I think it's normal.... I get snowboards shipped for alot cheaper, but it's not "fragile" like surfboards. I imagine surfboard box got to be huge with packing materials. Otherwise don't even think about shipping it unless you want a surfboard with lots of dings.
Heck, for $110 or so, why not buy a round trip ticket and go get it yourself? You might have to pay little more than $110, but added cost should be off set by your trip to CAL. (and maybe you can catch a wave there too) I belive you are in PDX or SW WA somewhere, right?
