... and while my own experience isn't enough to confirm that, my boss (who had something like 30+ years in remote sensing and satellite imagery) said the same -- the optics prevent much better resolution than appox. 1-2 feet. Furthermore, according to him, the satellites are on fixed paths (so they can't just put them wherever/whenever they want) and the images take time to download -- typically, there are stations which download the images at specific geographic spots on the globe. So, for instance, what you see in Will Smith's movie "Enemy of the State" couldn't happen.
I guess there's always the "you never know what they've thought up behind closed doors" factor, but I would tend to agree with the physics argument (while simultaneously acknowledging that there are some clever people working on this, no doubt)...
