If you're not a photo snob, anything 2megapixel or better will do. In this price range, look for battery life above anything else. Some cameras are good for 20 pix then the battery is pooched, others can do hundreds or a thousand or more photos.
Another factor would be the lens. Something with a lower f number is desirable for lower light situations and for decent flash range. a f2.8 will let in more light than a f4.5. (more than twice as much light actually). A physically large front piece of glass on the lens is often an indicator of its light gathering ability if the zoom ranges are comparable.
Major zoom isn't really important. You can usually back up a couple feet or walk closer to get the composition you want. Prior to the 80's zooms were not common and millions of great photos were taken without them. About 75% of my photography is done with a fixed focal length non-zoom lens. If you wanted a good zoom to photograph birds in flight or wild animals, multiply your budget by 10.
