I proposed after I danced with my wife at a debutante ball... Krewe members give their dance partners a "favor" to remember the night. Well, I had wrapped Shelley's ring inside a krewe favor box and said (after our dance), "Well , I've got something really special for you tonight". You can imagine my chagrine when she responded (without opening the box) "oh, it's just another dust collector... I've seen this year's favor and it's not so much. I'll open it later". Well, in my best and most sincere "I've never been so offended in my life" voice, I told her I thought she had better manners than that and that maybe I should just take that "favor" back, sight unseen. She was taken aback, properly scolded as she was, and said "oh no, oh no, I'll open it right now!" When she pulled back the tissue and cotton, the look on her face told the tale and when she calmly, coyly, and yet slyly, said "so what does this mean????," I properly got down on one knee (in front of about 300 folks) and said the magic words. She burst into tears (of joy, I think) and ran around the ballroom telling all her friends and showing off her new status. When I caught up to her (she: beaming and pulling me close), and said "So, you never said 'Yes'... should I start looking for another dance partner?" she responded "No, you fool, Yes, Yes, YES, you're all mine, now!" and we've lived happily ever after for 12 years and two boys now.
Remember, if you're the one for her, it won't matter how you propose so long as you _do_. If she's the one for you, you'll find the right way, the way that will make her feel as special as you believe her to be.
May you have all the joy and happiness I've had and hope to have in the future.
Good luck, and God Bless
Allen in New Orleans
