to cars, they have a retail price and a whole sale price and sometimes even a price for good customers.
The retail price is what they tell anyone that walks in the door, the whole sale price is for insurance (usually their retail price with discounts or allowances), then for some dentist you can negotiate a price.
I don't know where you live, the prices do vary, but from what you stated, you seem to live in a relatively nice professional neighborhood and the prices are within "reasonable" range.
Most of the time, the dentist doesn't direcly deal with patient charges but let the office manager handles billing etc.; then the office manager usually just goes by the stated prices and offers little room for negotiation.
You may want to call around, especially dentists who run things themselves. These places may be more receptive to family discount etc.. However, beware of fly-by-night outfits and check the dentist's credentials and references.
You want to check out prices for dental insurance, they are much cheaper than health insurance. With young kids, you may think about plans that may cover orthodontic work as well.
