Not a leader, but Saab tries to optimize for fuel efficiency too rather than pure performance. Almost no other car in this class has such low RPMs at highway speed, and that with 4-cyl engine.
My brother's 318i BMW gets about 10%less mpg than 9-5 wagon while being smaller, lighter and having smaller engine. It does seem to be more agile thank to gearing, as it is optimized for agility and maybe EPA mpgs, but not real life highway mpgs.
Anyway, I am looking forward to the revised EPA procedures to determine mileage. SUVs and trucks will probably suffer a lot because of aerodynamics.
