The recommended interval is something like 10K miles, which I consider excessive. 5K should be entirely fine. I run 3-5K, depending on weather. (weather I feel like doing the oil this weekend.) Running it up to 6K once isn't going to kill you - it isn't like the oil is just fine at 4K, and then turns to dirty jell-o within the next few hundred miles. Sludge buildup is due to a series of long oil changes, and possibly a few missed ones. An extra 1K miles once or twice won't hurt, especially if you're doing it more frequently than the recommended interval.
5K should be fine; and if you're running synthetic or semi-synthetic, all the better.
