I saw a few hundred Envoy/Trailblazers, Suburbans, and (shudders) an Avalanche today. I don't think they care. If they did, hybrids would be selling and pushrods would be obsolete. I'm sure a six-speed Corvette could get 30 MPG but nobody is trying (I don't have a Corvette) and EPA figures are all out of whack anyway. All GM has to do (in the US at least) is ensure the simple arithmetic mean (the average) of all the cars it produces meets a certain number. It doesn't matter if they sell 2 standard Aveos and sixty trillion Avalanches/Hummers/Escapades.
Last year's average fuel mileage: 20.7, the lowest it's been since 1985. Americans still don't care, meaning it's bad business for GM to care. They're around to sell people what they want. Plus, every car ad on the planet (especially domestics, some Swedish exceptions) are full of worthless facts and misinformation intending to sell cars, not to educate somebody.
Two cents.
