I have only used that type of setup on a Mac but it is my understanding that it should work just as well on Windows (if that is what you have). I agree that you have come up with a great solution and one that will give you benfits down the road. I would recommend a drive that is Firewire or USB 2.0 for the enclosure. If it is USB 1.1 the speed will kill you. That speed is fine for a keyboard but not a hard drive. Even if you computer only supports the 1.1 spec, spend the bucks and get a better enclosure for future use on different machines. I have used a Firewire enclosures with great success. Just pop the drive in and plug in the cable. Coomputer sees it! No format needed. I even can boot off it.
