AWD/4WD in snow and ice

It seems to me that, whenever I see a vehicle overturned next to an icy roadway, it's an SUV. Once in about 4 inches of unplowed snow, a 4WD SUV in the lane to my left lost control. How this happened is beyond me, as we were both going straight. The skid brought them in front of me, decelerating rapidly, and I took to the shoulder in my 9kt, never losing traction or skidding myself. I kept myi momentum and pulled back onto the road once he got things straightened out. Of course, I had snow tires, but I was amazed at how lousy that SUV was in the snow.
