OT: Help with repairing amplifier Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Sat, 20 Aug 2005 15:19:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have an old Arcam Alpha 3 amplifier and I've been having trouble with the volume control. I get a lot of crackling through the right speaker. If I spray contact cleaner in the control it helps for a while, but the problem always comes back. I believe the volume control is just a potentiometer, but I can't seem to find the one that's on my amplifier for sale anywhere. It's a 20KDX2. I think that means the total resistance is 20k ohms and the "x2" presumably refers to two channels. The "D" is flummoxing me. I found one website that tells me pots are labelled A, B or C. A is a logarithmic scale of resistance, B linear and C reverse log. But no mention of D.
Anybody have any knowledge of what would work as a replacement?
Alternatively, since I never use the balance other than in the central position and since it's only one channel that seems to be a problem, I wondered about cutting the legs to the bad side (if I can figure out what that is) and making the good side connect to both L and R channels. Would that work??
I have heard that taking the pot apart and scribbbling on the resistance surfaces with a pencil helps, but I figure if I'm going to all that effort I may as well just replace the pot.
Any help from all you electronics gurus out there would be appreciated!
Rod
