living the dream...building a kegerator-long Posted by michael [Email] (#1365) [Profile/Gallery] (more from michael) on Sun, 21 Aug 2005 19:18:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
took my girlfriend's 27" tv onto my covered (but not screened) back porch last week, mounting it with one of those wall mount thingies that they have in bars. so i was almost ready for football season. decided a kegerator was the final piece of the puzzle. bought a compact fridge on craigs.list for $50, and a conversion kit for $190 online, with the intention of using 1/4 kegs in it. local liquor store doesn't sell 1/4's, and anyways they're $45, while a 1/2 is $65. hmm. after some measuring, the fridge was big enough for a 1/2 keg...except that there's a shelf taking up 10" on the bottom, which houses the compressor underneath. SO--i swung the compressor out of the bottom, peeling refrigerant line from the foam on the back of the fridge to give me enough slack. i then cut the "shelf" out with a sawzall, and built a plywood platform. used some foam board to complete the box, made some liberal use of great stuff. now i had a truly rectangular interior space, with the compressor hanging out the back, which i built a plywood box around. i moved and rewired the tstat, since it was still in the way (and since i cut through the wires by accident). kind of "folded" the freezer compartment so it rested flat against the back wall (just a metal shelf with embedded coolant lines, but interestingly it functioned as the evaporator, and does the whole job of cooling the fridge). did some utility knife work inside the fridge, and now have a cozy keg housing. no need for a full size fridge, and only 5 hours start to finish (including picking up an empty keg for measurement purposes). only have to install the kit when it comes (should be easy), buy a keg, and pour some frosty beer! i'm giddy, but my girlfriend asked me why i didn't just buy a bunch of beer and store them in the fridge, instead of spending an extra $200 and doing all that work for beer on tap. sigh.
