Since there is no gasket involved, a metal-to-metal connection needs to be "persuaded" to seal correctly. Well, that's the shadetree theory. I believe the same problem exists with brake lines. Even banjo fittings are over-torqued: don't you have to absolutely crush the copper or aluminum washers to get them to seal?
Investing in some wrenches for flare nuts was one of my wisest moves, as it turns out.
