Actually the Saab will have a pretty similar amount of torque at 2,000 revs to the 400hp V8. I'm always amazed when I read the torque specs on modern GM V8's. Peak torque on these V8 engines is always way beyond 4,000 revs, usually at 4,500, even in the trucks. Saab turbos, whether it's the 2.3T of the 9-5 or the 2.8 V6 have their torque peaks at 1,800-2,000 revs, and lots of it, 258 ft/lbs, and they feel like V8's. A 9-5 Aero feels torquier than a BMW 540 V8 or a Mercedes E430-500. You use the 2,000 rev torque peak every time you drive, and with a turbo you get almost all of it at part throttle. Most folks will seldom get their V8's up to 4,500 revs and part throttle gets you only minimal torque, you gotta' nail it to find the torque. So a Saab turbo certainly can feel very much like a powerful V8 driven normally.
