Hey Geoff,
This has worked for me with about a 70% success rate. Stick the hard drive in the freezer for about 2 minutes. Then plug it into the PC. But when you do plug it in, plug it to the cable that the CD used to be plugged into so it is on it's own channel (less chance of it conflicting with your main HD).
If that doesn't work try getting an external USB drive sled (make sure it is externally powered). Sometimes the slowdown in data rate transfer helps sick hard drives become usable.
Since hindsight is always 20/20 you might want to get him a second HD. I do this now because i blow up my C drive often enough that having someplace quick to back up is worth the $80 investment for a decent second HD.
Hope this Helps,
-Luis
