...my point is that they are polling Consumer Reports readers, not doing a random poll of owners of each type of car. Selecting any particular group, regardless of who they are, introduces bias into the results of the poll.
I agree that Lexus is no appliance, and I'm not saying that every car they rate as good is actually bad. However, I think they are looking for something different in a car than I am. I'm willing to put up with a DI replacement at 100K miles (not unreasonable, considering the mileage) and other things like that. Also, when I see that owners of X car have reported needing repairs to a certain subsystem of the car, such as the engine, you have no idea if it's a complicated problem or not. Maybe a certain make had trouble with a wandering idle, and it was a quick fix. This gets rung up as an engine problem, same as an Escort that starts burning oil at 90K miles. So their data are not especially helpful to me.
CU is not composed of a bunch of car enthusiasts or even car experts. Instead, I would say they are value enthusiasts. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't look to them for car advice.
I agree, the Lexus IS looks to be quite the car. Maybe if I had that kind of cash I'd be buying something that is fun to drive and super reliable, but I only had about 6 grand, so I bought something that is fun to drive.
