I guess, but I've always questioned the tests. But they are good guidelines about how well a car will protect you in a collision. They also highlight strange differences in similar models. A friend was comparing the Impala, Grand Prix and Olds Intrigue a few years back. Same car for all intents and purposes. But in a frontal collsion, the front seat passenger was seriously hurt in the Olds but not in the other two. He bought a Saab. :-)
The wild card is that all vehicles are tested with the same mass hitting it. So a Mini or a 9-3SS gets T-boned by the same 3,100-odd pound sled as a Suburban or Ford 500. Which says nothing about a Mini or 9-3SS getting hit by a Suburban or a a Ford F350 on the street.
No way to predict what will happen, so driving safely and defensively is the best tactic of all.
