There's more to sales than automotive sales. Those guys have to hustle for each and every sale. And they have to work weekends and evenings.
I work with sales guys who call on industrial customers. Once you build a relationship with the customers in your sales territory, you don't have to hustle quite so hard on them. You need to maintain the relationships, make sure they're taken care of, and then focus on new customers or gaining market share from your competitors. Some of the guys I work with move up from calling on a territory to get to call on a named account. They get the title "Global Account Manager" and they oversee all sales efforts and customer satisfaction for huge global customers. They take care of the big shots and it ends up being a lot of heated meetings with customers and internal people, with fine dinners, golf, and drinking. They also do a lot of crazy global travel. To me, that's much better than trying to sell extra floor mats and upgraded chrome rims.
There are all kinds of jobs in sales. Phramacuetials, industrial, financial, high-tech, etc. Keep your options open and talk to folks in sales, if that's what you want to look at.
What's your major? What is your work experience? Have you done any internships or similar work during your time off?
