As a NYT editor... Posted by Peter [Email] (#2804) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Peter) on Thu, 26 Jan 2006 15:33:24 In Reply to: One of the best sites, by far -- and it is FREE!, Pete Saab 9-5, Tue, 24 Jan 2006 19:12:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
...I certainly understand the perception among some people that the Times has an agenda. Certainly, our editorial pages slant to the left of the Bush administration. But so do at least 48 percent of all American voters. Now remember that the editorial page is not the news gathering operation. No contact, no influence.
And also remember that AT LEAST 90 percent of our content (or any first-hand newsgathering operation) is not political news. This includes news feature stories, breaking news on things like hurricanes and mine disasters and fires in Brooklyn, the sports and features sections, the travel sections, the business sections, the Times magazine, the book review, home and garden, dining, science Times etc. Pick up the paper on any given day and check, if you don't believe me.
Of the 10 percent that is political news, I challenge anyone to say that it slants one way or another. For instance, Times haters might say that we have covered the Medicare drug plan in a way that makes Bush look bad. Yet 25 states have declared medical emergencies because retirees weren't able to get their prescription drugs this month. And the program itself is costing you and me hundreds of millions more that Bush told Congress it would. So how do you report that any other way?
I'm always amused by how few Times-bashers actually read it every day. I try to read the NY Post, the WSJ and the Washington Post, and watch Fox every now and then. Take away the WSJ editorials and the O'reillys on Fox, and they're pretty much down the middle, too.
As for the NYT auto section being anti gas guzzler...well, I think the car buying public are voting with their feet on that one. We don't need to help people along...
Anyway, I thought only crusty old lefties drove Saabs...
Peace out...
