Nick:
Lots of good advice here. There is a wide range of performance between individuals based on genetics, age, and conditioning level. I work out at a college fitness center with a bunch of 18 - 22 year olds, but I'm 60. I do a variety of machines at a relatively high heart rate, sweat a lot, but never push my self to the point where I feel discomfort. Many of the students (especially the women) are able to run a pace two minutes a mile faster than me, with no sweat, while chattering away the whole time.
Stay within your abilities (below the anerobic threshold unless you're training for sprint competition), alternate hard and rest (or light) days, and just have fun.
