It's called "multipath fading." Radio waves are reflected off surrounding buildings, hills, etc., so you have several signals coming at you from different directions. In some locations they interfere constructively, giving you a good signal. A few inches or feet away they might interfere destructively, giving a poor signal. How far you have to move is related to the wavelength. For more info, lots of resources talk about constructive/destructive interference. Look at wikipedia, or google it.
