Credit agencys want to see revolving credit lines responsibly maintained. If you have no credit, it is actually just as bad or worse than bad credit. I know it sounds ludicrous, but there is no merit in America to not use credit. The key is to use credit responsibly.
Unforunately, there is not much you can do. Utilities and cell phones unfortunately are not reported to the credit agencys. Only lines of credit , revolving accounts i.e. mortgages, car pyaments, credit cards, are reported. I would suggest getting a good credit card with a rewards program, using it to pay for stuff (i.e. gasoline) and then paying the balance at the end of the month. Over time, the benefits to this are twofold, 1) you get to keep your cash longer, which lets you build interest on it or use it for other things and 2) you get reward points and can maybe take a free flight every couple years ;).
