First of all, I am still shocked that it is necessary to spend money through grants, etc. to state the fairly obvious. I'm all for proof, but I think there are other priorities (end of OT) to spend that money on (like education?).
As for this study, it seems unlikely in just a year, 34% of the drivers studied were involved in crashes (82/241). What defines a "crash?" Hitting the curb? Another driver, etc.?! Perhaps they were simply worried about the "supervision." I definately drive different with passengers.
I understand the study is "statistically valid," but how about some more details. DISTRACTION?! What's that, like what all-encompassing word can we use? What would the other issue be, mechanical failure, perhaps weather, but then the snow was "distracting" too? Distraction is everything from cell phone/reading/eating/lipstick to, literally, "under the sun" - light "distracting" you.
And yes, there was an increase of 564 deaths (1.32% increase), but how many additional drivers were added. In other words, what was the percentage of drivers killed, and did that increase? I suspect not.
I hate when "studies," moreso it's the reports, leave out important facts to get their point across. I'll forget that they are telling us likely conclusions that we shouldn't need to fund research like this... But facts like driving is still the safest form of transportation (flight, etc.), per capita, in the US. On the Autobahn, deaths per capita is lower than the US, despite areas with "no" speed limit. In NY (my home state, and yes, I'm from a city, but no I'm not from NYC), cell phone use without hands-free is against the law. However, I see at least 5 instances within my 15 minute commute of those that violate the law; don't get me started on seeing police cruisers whose operator is not using a headset or similar.
Okay, enough babbling (sorry). Just glad knowing my Saab will hold up when someone is "distracted" from driving. Back to work now...
Sean
