I'm a traditional guy and would agree on the classic items. But I too popped the question (and she said yes) in December. Ours is May of next year.
I already have my gifts (or at least idea) picked out, and I think I am going with USB thumb drives. By the time I buy them, they will probably get 20 gigs for the $100 or so. Figure I can either personalize the case, or actually engrave or imprint a statement on them.
It would be something I would like, and I see it as something they hopefully would find useful (I am pretty sure it will to all but maybe one, and I could always personalize for a few of them). I will most likely attempt to prepopulate them with incriminating evidence from past (or future bachelor party) events.
The problem is that seeing other groomsman's gifts passed, they weren't something everyone liked. For example, one gift was cuff links from Tiffanys. They were terrific, but one of the recipients indicated that he will never wear them. I would take them, but he figured he could sell the box and bag on eBay and get something out of it. Then, one gift I received was a hand-made wallet. Although nice, I carry a money clip, and the future in-laws purchased it for me, thus hard to make use of.
So my recommendations would be more of the same from below. Think uniqueness, usefulness, and relevance. Watches are excellent, but my group all have nice watches, mainly from our significant others, which make them hard to replace. However, if your group does not, it is an excellent idea. Same with cuff links and others.
Whatever you choose, spend some time on thinking about what they need, like, and might want. At that point, it will probably be an easy decision. Best of luck with both your decision, and your special event!
