OT== road bikes -- brands, sources?

Looking to buy a road bike -- first bike purchase for myself in decades, still riding a trusty Raleigh Grand Prix -- I'm a recreational biker -- may take a couple of 50 milers a year -- but that the exception.
Kind of astounded at the prices -- test rode several models, but how do you really choose from a 10 minute ride? (my first car, heck, my daughters first car 2 years ago cost less than many of the road bikes I saw!)
Tried full carbon, carbon fork, carbon fork/rear stays models -- but in a short ride -- not huge apparent differences.
Same with the components -- one bike shifted poorly, but it was likely out of adjustment vs poor Shimano 105 derailleurs!
Cannondale, Trek, seem to be big in this area (north/central NJ). Are the internet dealers (performance bikes, bikes direct) worth using?
Seem to be many brands, is it better to buy based on components?
Thanks for the info you have --
Pete
