and then there is the issue with different grounds and having a potential voltage difference between the grounds. Had a buddy that had done a new add-on to an old house. everthing was ok (well sort of ...) as long as all related items (say the computer box, monitor, and PRINTER) were all plugged into either the old or the new wiring. Eventually he moved the printer to the other side of the room and when it was turned on... it let the smoke out... and as every good electrical person knows, electricity works on smoke... as soon as you let the smoke out it stops working...
Also had a similar problem between two buildings in Washington State at a Navy base. They finally went to current loop to isolate the two building's grounds from one another (RS232 was a common ground between the buildings as the RS232 connector at each end is grounded to device ground, which was grounded to power ground... lotta flashcubes one day!) which uses optical tx/rx to move the signal from one end to the other. But that's another story...
