The big drawback to low-voltage track lights with integrated transformers has always been the cost. Good ones can easily top $100 per fixture while low-voltage types that rely on a central transformer are less than half that. I would think that types that use a single transformer would limit the number of lights you can have on the track, but the lights would be smaller. There shouldn't be any difference in noise so long as they all use good quality transformers that don't buzz. I'm not sure about energy efficiency, but I'd imagine that there wouldn't be a significant difference between the types assuming the bulbs are all the same.
