I just inherited my wife's 9-3 because she got a new 9-5. I gave one of my son's the '95 900S that I was driving and sold the '86 900 to my sister (for cheap, otherwise she'd bitch to my mother!). My son was devastated.....he loved that classic 900. It was 21 years old with only 79K on the odometer and looked great. It was sooooo very paid for that I never balked at any repair. If you're figuring $100 a month to keep it going, what could you be driving for $1200 bucks a year? A hundred bucks a month won't even put you in a car you don't even want to own or lease, let alone drive. You began your post with the rhetorical question of when does a car become a liability. Probably as soon as you drive it off of the dealer's lot, unless it's some sort of a collectible with an appreciating value. I kept up after that old 86, nothing special, but, of course, the occasional higher-than-expected expense. It got all of my kids back and forth safely from college and is now serving the same purpose for my sister's kids.
