Yeah I didn't really necessarily understand the connection and was wondering the exact same things. Could be type Chaz likes best. Could be they are relatively inexpensive generally which might be a good match for an inexpensive bed. Could be ....

However, the other possibility requires a little understanding of the American mattress industry. They are insane! In recent years standard conventional mattresses have gotten extremely thick. An 11" mattress is now thin for a conventional mattress by one of the big 3 S companies (Sealy, Serta, Simons). 12-16 inches + probably most typical and some are actually around 20" thick. It is really a joke. Personally I like the low open informal look of a lower bed height and really don't want to see the mattress more than 16-18" inches off the floor when on the bed. Put one of these thick things on an existing bed including many of the new ones and they hide too much of the headboard, rise well above many standard nightstands (mine are only 19" or less in height) and just break up a room. For someone that doesn't want a foam mattress (these tend to be thinner) this would be one way to get a reasonably priced lower profile mattress that would look better on many platform beds.

My rant is b/c I have just been through this process. My slats on my platform bed are at 11" off the ground. Add to that one of the thinner conventional mattress your looking at 22" or better off the ground. Too far up the headboard and a good 3" above nightstands. And lost is the style and sense of openess such a design is really intended to impart.
