There are potentially significant differences between brands of gas. In another comment in this message string, SloopJohnB mentioned Top Tier gas.
Top Tier gas is gasoline that meets the standards set by a consortium of major auto manufacturers, including GM, BMW, VW, Toyota and Honda. These manufactures believe that the current government standards do not go far enough to ensure optimum engine performance.
According to their website, these automakers have raised the bar. Top Tier Gasoline helps drivers avoid lower quality gasoline which can leave deposits on critical engine parts, which reduces engine performance.
Many brands of gasoline have the detergent additives to meet these Top Tier standards, including Chevron/Texaco, Conoco/Phillips66/76 and Shell. Several other smaller brands meet the Top Tier standards as well. Notably, Exxon/Mobil and BP/Arco do not meet the Top Tier standards.
You can get more information and see the entire list of Top Tier retailers by clicking the attached link.
