If the Explorer had ABS, then it MAY have helped to shift it in to 2WD. If not, then a locked center differential makes sure that all the wheels are turning, which will help keep the car going the right direction. I suspect that Caarl locked his front wheels with the slightest touch of the brake on his '72, and immediately spun because of it. Personally, I would never change out of 4WD to gain control. Even with ABS, and TC, having all four tires linked to the engine is one more way to control them, and that is one more way to control the car.
When I was younger, my family was on our way to the ski slopes for a high school ski race. We came around a corner, started down a very long grade and found the road full of cars facing all directions. While my dad pumped the brakes (Pre-ABS) to try to slow down, he finally had to use the gas pedal to control the Bronco. 10 white-knuckles later, and a brush of the snow bank, we were going much faster than anyone wanted, but we were going in the right direction. (This was in CA where, in my opinion, and along with WA and OR, the snow is the hardest to drive in due to moisture content. I say this after living and driving in eastern WA, ID, MT, CO, and WY. Perhaps snow at +/-32 degrees and 10-15% moisture occurs with lake-effect snow and along the east coast, but I'm not sure. The high moisture content and relatively warm temps, the snow becomes compacted, and a layer of water forms on the snow due to pressure and "warm" tires, leading to very slick conditions. It's kinda like soft, lubricated ice.)
It's counter-intuitive, and it won't always save the day (especially on a down grade), but sometimes the best way to control a car is by using the accelerator.
