What??? Buckeye "ethics" here in Columbus??? I'm admittedly a transplant, although I've lived here 16 years.
The Buckeyes are one of the whiniest teams in college football and many of the fans cross the line of obsession. This year after their loss to Illinois, the Buckeyes started a fight on the field, and then for two weeks after the game we heard all of the excuses as to why they lost.
Hey, it's a game. It's not life and death. Soliders fighting in Iraq is life and death. And the Buckeyes are just a football team. If they lose, life will not end. Buckeye fans always want to blame someone other than the team. After the loss to LSU, in this city you would have thought someone died. Like I said, they get more upset at this around here than they do soldiers dying in Iraq. That's a fact.
And yes, they got to the championship this year in a very back door manner. They did not deserve to be there, I'm sorry. After playing so many "softball" teams earlier in the season, many people around here joke that they'll be playing against high school teams next season to beef up that ol' win record even quicker.
I agree with the other posters regarding ethics versus penalties. I did not see the entire game, but the part I saw (2nd half) was chock full of penalties levied against the Buckeyes. Dirty play or sloppy play? Probably not dirty; Tressel is not that kind of coach. He's a first class guy. But it was sloppy and lazy and desperate football playing.
I am not anti-Ohio State, but I am anti-getting it shoved down my throat every day as a Columbus resident, and the constant Buckeye whining really gets on my nerves and the nerves of many people I know.
One of our TV sports personalities was substituting on radio earlier this year for someone who was on vacation, and he made a comment that he thought the Buckeyes might lose a particular upcoming game. He got threats phoned in to the station against the station and against him personally! Real threats. These callers were NOT kidding. Unbelievable.
When people ask me why I'm not a Buckeye fan, the simple and first answer is I went to college somewhere else, and the second is the hysteria around here drives me crazy!!!
I'm prepared for the inevitable onslaught of flak I'm going to get by sending this. However, there was an article in our local paper last weekend about how a growing number of us in Columbus are tired of the Buckeye hysteria, so I feel in good company.
