Well, let's see...you'd have to go away back, since GM's been involved with SAAB since 1990.
Hmmm, on second thought, you'd have to back before the 9000, since it was a joint venture and shared platforms with FIAT, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo.
Wait - before that even, to before 1978, since SAAB badge-engineered the SAAB 600 from the Lancia Delta.
Nope - even earlier than that, because in 1967, with the introduction of the SAAB 99, the 4-cylinder engine came from Triumph, even though SAAB did actually build the engine all by itself (from the Triumph design) starting in 1970. The "all-SAAB" C900 has an engine derived from a Triumph...
Ooops - my mistake - even the 1966 SAAB 95 and 96 two-stroke V4 engines were Ford engines.
So - you'd have to get a SAAB built between 1949 and 1965 to be a "real" SAAB.
Enough GM bashing already. Give it up - SAAB has been "real" for over 4 decades now.
I'm not trying to diminish people's thoughts on their SAABs. If someone doesn't like SAAB since GM's purchase, don't buy one. Simple as that, but stop trying to call pre-GM SAABs "real", because in reality, there hasn't been a real SAAB since 1965.
I'm simply glad that there was a company out there sentimental enough to purchase a failing company that would have closed it's doors years ago had it not been bailed out. Personally, I'm glad that the SAAB brand is still available if I happened to want to buy one new.
