I totally agree that no business - especially an automotive business - wants educated customers. They absolutely want the customer that takes everything the business says as gospel, doesn't ask questions, and pays promptly. The fact that there are people like this is a big part of why we have all sorts of wacky problems in this country IMHO... McDonald's serves food, you eat it, you get fat (or least unhealthy). WHY DIDN'T ANYBODY WARN ME??? Duh.
I do understand that the cost of running a shop is going up - $2000 scan tools you have to update every year are an enormous expense, one that makes a $40 Snap-On screwdriver seem cheap in comparison. Ironically, the tools that make diagnosing the car that much easier (maybe...) cost a fortune and rob you of billable "diagnosis time." I do understand that you have to make the money spent on these tools back... BUT, I'd also say that (as a dealer) comparing your $2000 scan tool to a billboard or radio ad shows you it isn't that big of a cost, and Mr. Science telling his friends, family, and coworkers how quick & painless his trip to the dealer was has excellent marketing value... You clearly get this, or you wouldn't be giving away your advice for free on this board - and you know, your name is the one that came up when my girlfriend's sister's father-in-law (how's that?) mentioned he needed to replace the turbo on his 9-3. (Whether he'll actually ever do it is another question... :)
Again, if Saab was the #1 automaker in its segment, and everyone looked on a Saab with admiration and envy this conversation wouldn't be happening. Saabs would be sold on the name, and everyone would happily pay $109 for a diagnosis. But, when you're the #last automaker in the segment, and you aren't winning sales on your name alone, IMHO you need to do whatever you can to spread the word, make the sale. I do believe (perhaps errantly) that these little spiffs really help make sales.
