Let me start by saying I've been using and selling AMSOIL synthetics for almost 30 years, so I could be considered a bit biased.
A good synthetic engine oil will do a number of things:
It will hold up better in high temperature/high stress operation (resists oxidation).
It will run cooler than non-synthetic.
It will normally give better fuel economy (more slippery).
It seals better than non-synthetic.
It reduces wear.
There are those who will contest these. However, when you talk to the lubricant engineers, they don't contest!!
Personally--I saw about a 3 mpg fuel savings on my 1976 Saab after changing. The oil got warm to the touch after a couple hours on the interstate. I was able to extend the drain interval to yearly (as much as 30,000 miles)--safely. I picked up another mpg after changing the manual transmission fluid--for the life of the car.
