Nope, the 9-5 has the derivative of the original Saab 99 motor who'e design was purchased from Ricardo back in the late 60's. Your 9-5 motor is made at the Scania truck plant near Stockholm I believe.
The Ecotec 4 cylinder line began as a Saturn motor in the 2000 L series and it's a turbocharged derivative of this engine that Saab uses in the four cylinder 9-3's. The 9-5 motor is labeled Ecotech on some 9-5's I believe, but it's an entirely different engine. The GM Ecotec is smoother and was designed with an aluminum block. Your 9-5 motor is a cast iron block IIRC.
The "new" engine is just a direct injection version. All makers find improved economy and performance with direct injection, a win win.
