Took car out of storage need help/advice/com'nts (long) Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Sat, 2 May 2009 10:47:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Thank you fellas. I don't have anyone ever with me that can say to me, when I hear a funny noise, "Hey, everything's fine, that's just the cooling system getting rid or air bubbles, just relax," or something like that. I tackle all of this stuff by myself, and I learn from all of you. So, this is my experience today:
I took my Viggen out of storage. I had put it away for the winter for 5.5 months. Changed the oil, and well that's about it. I read, and asked on starting it after this period, and did as I was told. I took the fuse out for the fuel pump, and I disconnected the DIC connector (I figured it's pointless to have spark). I cranked it for about 15-30 seconds ( I was a little worried, I had never done this before and felt like I was doing something bad to the car, since I never hear it cranking like this for so long, but I convinced myself that this is a million times slower than if I were to actually start it right up, and obviously couldn't be bad) Problem was, the oil pressure light did not go off, which got me worried. I tried it again, and decided I'm not going to do any more. I checked for any oil leaks underneath, and saw nothing. Started the car up, and the light went away...don't know what that was about, but do tell me that doing what I did was good for the engine, regardless of the little light.
Second, I drove my car, and decided not to take it too far, as I noticed the coolant was slightly low, slightly above the sensor mark.I was already at the gas station checking my tire pressure, and given it was just slightly low, I decided to drive it anyway but not too far. Eventually, the SID gave me the fill coolant fluid message, and I pulled over and checked it, and it was as before (The movement of the car probably set it off). I assumed the engineers set the sensor at a "safe" level for me to get home, another 4-5 km.
The car is off, and in the garage. Where could I have lost coolant during storage? I find this really odd since the car is in tip top shape, and it was fine before. I have to do a coolant change/flush, so I suppose I will be doing that as soon as possible.
The whole drive, I was a bit distraught, felt like anything could go wrong...but hopefully I did everything fine. I very much appreciate all of your help, as always.
