For non-critical problems, for reversable procedures, I'll follow what the doctor says, if it makes sense. I like to do some of my own research.
For important stuff, I look for a second opinion. A good doctor should have no problem with backup.
When it comes to eyes and brains, anything other than an eyeglass prescription warrants a second opinion. I've had a very wrong diagnosis when it came to eyes; it didn't sniff right, so we went for a second opinion and it saved eyesight.
Insurance is nice, but if it doesn't pay, I'll pay it myself. I'll also pay out of my own pocket for the right treatment. Money is important, but I'm astounded a people who will skimp on a medical procedure, but not on a big-screen TV. I'm not say you're making this decision based on money, just saying I know too many people who do, who can afford it.
The potential loss of eyesight, headaches that could be something else, I'd want to be darn sure. If you get a second opinion and it backs the first one, then you can go forward with treatment with confidence. If the answers are radically different, then research more.
Eyesight. Brains. Surgery. Don't go cheap - get as much information as you can. Ask LOTS of questions. Get smart about it (not Internet discussion boards)
