In addition to the reasons listed by EGD, storage and parking a car in many European cities, Paris in particular, is very difficult. Old European cities were not built around the needs of automobile owners.
A friend who rented an apartment on Boulevard Saint-Germain, in the heart of Paris, had to store/park his C900 Convertible 2 blocks away in an underground parking of a hotel.
I agree that, in North America, we can easily downsize some of our vehicles and upsize the mileage without losing much.
In over 40 years of car ownership I only owned cars with 4 cylinder engines, except for my Triumph TR6.
My 2000 Viggen serves me extremely well!
