My brother is not mechanically inclined, and he does not cut the grass, his wife does it. For many years I used to help him put away the riding mower each fall and set up his snow blower. Told him to clean it up, clean the air filter, drain the gas tank, run it dry and change the oil so it can be put it away until next season. Put the battery in the basement so it won't freeze in the shed.
Somewhere along the line he bought a smaller Toro riding mower which could be stood on its rear end to save space. The manual advised him to drain the oil, so it would not leak out when stood up. He then always drained the oil each season and left the gas in.
This went on until he bought a larger riding mower. End of season #1 he drains the oil, leaves the gas, puts it in the shed. In the spring his wife runs out, hits the starter (battery survived the winter!) and she makes two passes on the yard when the connecting rod came through the side of the engine - no oil. $650 repair for a very used engine.
If you are the only one who knows there is no oil in the engine, I guess its ok, but if there is a chance someone else will use it without checking, be prepared.
Leave the oil in, drain the gas tank and run it dry.
