Vet: fuel mileage test procedure Posted by mag [Email] (#1906) [Profile/Gallery] (more from mag) on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 19:16:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'd like comments on a fuel mileage test procedure.
The tests should be repeatable and not patently flawed. I have a modest budget for this, so expensive lab equipment and test tracks and full tank tests are out.
Here's what I'm thinking:
* Test Chevron premium; zero ethanol premium; a series of ethanol-gasoline blends about 10% apart as E10, E20, E30 up to E85; 200 proof neat ethanol; 190 proof neat ethanol.
* Define a freeway round trip of about 150 miles.
* For the blends, make an approximate mixture from the pump, filling to the neck, mix the pump, filter and line contents by running the fuel pump for 2 minutes with the ignition off.
* Drive the route, ending at the fueling station.
* Draw a measured volume fuel sample and test it for composition. Composition can be tested using a GM FlexFuel sensor and an appropriate reader and display unit. This is accurate within +/- 5%. I'd like better accuracy but don't know how to do it inexpensively.
* Refill to the neck to determine consumption on the test run.
The test vehicle is a 1986 900T 16V
At some ethanol concentration, install larger injecters and possibly a 3.0 bar FPR.
Comments? Thanks!
