Funny enough, I actually got another taste of this yesterday on my way home from a long weekend. I was heading south toward Scranton on I-81, which has become notorious during the summer road-work season, and everything was smooth sailing until I neared a work zone where 2 lanes merged to 1.
Traffic went to stop-and-go, and yes, I tried to let large gaps open up in front of me, but it's hard to maintain a crawl at 5mph when the backup extends for roughly 5 miles. I think I'd been stuck in it for at least 20 minutes before finally seeing the sign saying "Right Lane Closed - 2 Miles." At least then I knew how much farther it would continue!
As I finally got close to the merge point (clearly marked by a sign), a few people coasted past in the right lane and merged without too much fuss. However, the jerk award goes to a guy in a massive Dodge Ram 2500 Heavy Duty diesel truck (with dual exhaust stacks behind the cab) who went barging in past the merge point...pulling a TRAILER behind him! Yes, that caused some slamming of brakes.
What gets me is that the actual stretch of single-lane road couldn't have been more than 1/4 mile. Seconds after merging, we were up to 45-50mph through the work zone, and about a minute later it was back to two lanes with huge spaces between cars. That is, until another mile or two down the road, when I got stuck again in the backup leading to the next work zone! Oh, how maddening...
I may have to read that book you and others mentioned. I'm in my 20s as well, and thinking about this discussion helped me stay calm last night...well, except for the part where I put my foot down and blew past Mr. Heavy Duty and his trailer on an uphill climb! ;-)
