The question you should ask yourself is in what environment will you use the camera. With the models you mentioned, it's probably just the daily scenes, which mean very little exposure to dirt. Don't know about Canon, but Nikon lenses have 5 years warranty with U.S. models. Personally, I would not buy the protection plan. I have a D90 with Nikon and third party lenses. Also have a Nikon film camera about 10 years old. I take them on hiking and backpacking trips, and occasional dusty construction sites. No problem with any equipment.
I had a Pentax film camera that was about 20 years old until the humidity living in Central America for two years killed the exposure meter and caused fungus growth inside the lens. Loved that Pentax, but I was young and inexperience.
About upgrading lens with your friend, I hope you guys are really good friends and have no problem splitting time with it. Nikon used lenses seem to hold value very well. Save the money, get a good book, such as from Thom Hogan, and click away. If Nikon, I highly recommend the 35mm f1.8. Enjoy!
