They'll take them and they'll work in all manual mode. Not ideal, but technically functional.
That said, if a monstrous lens selection is important, go for a mid-range Nikon with the focusing motor. d40/d60/d5000 don't have it because most people won't need it. d50,d70,D80,d300, etc.. have it. I rate the d50 better than the d40 solely because of this feature, even though it's a tiny bit older.
