Yeah, I'm not really the hyper-miler type... I basically go as fast as is reasonable + not get a ticket (never got one yet, knock on wood!)...
My return trip was in a 1989 900s automatic. What a difference! much less comfy ride than the 9-5, though the seats are maybe a little better, though that may be more related to stopping every 2 hours to refuel (fuel pump starting to go, didn't want to tempt fate so only used top half of tank, then again I basically did the same in the 9-5)... Auto tranny also questionable, so I took it easy on it, my average speed was probably closer to 70mph instead of 75, and obviously, no downshifting on the highway... oh yeah, and loaded down, tools, fluids, set of wheels, no AC, but winter tires on it (not that cold yet, but the summers were beyond drivable - cracking, bulges even)...
Ok, here's the (partial) data on it:
leg 1: 18.929L/210km = 9.01L/100km = 26.1 mpg
leg 2: 17.744L/203km = 8.74L/100km = 26.9 mpg
leg 6: 25.24L/288km = 8.76L/100km = 26.8 mpg
L are from fuel receipts, km are from google maps (seems accurate - I compared my 9-5 odometer readings with google maps + they jive). legs 1 + 2 correspond are normal highway, not too hilly. Leg 6 included half an hour of stop and go city driving.
That's actually pretty good for a 3 speed! C4C is baloney if they are clunking c900s + the least efficient ones still can do 26mpg highway (or 80/20 mixed)!
I've done the same drive in many other vehicles, though usually with a couple bikes + a ski box on the roof. In my 1993 900s slushbox (loaded down, 2 bikes, ski box avg 75mph) I got around 21mpg. In a 2009 Forester base model (rental) same speed, same bikes, ski box etc... 21mpg! In a 2008 Legacy wagon (rental) base, same speed, bikes, ski box etc... 22mpg. Mazda5 with no racks or bikes was closer to the 9-5 but I didn't measure accurately.
That said, my father in law routinely averages about 42mpg in their 2007 Civic (but drives slower). I'd rather drive a Saab than try to compete with that...
