Sometimes the little guy wins.
A couple of years ago I got an offer from Amex for a new card that promises me 50K rewards points if I use the card to buy $500 worth of goods in the first two months of ownership. First year card fee is waived. That's cake. Cha-ching. I make the purchases, pay the balance, shred the cards and use the 50K points to get $250 worth of travelers cheques from their rewards service. I close out the cards and tell them thanks.
Almost exactly 1 year later I get another offer in the mail for the exact same thing! Again, I pocketed the $250 and closed the cards.
A couple of weeks ago I got a VISA offer for 10K points. It's only $100 in rewards, but it will essentially cost me nothing.
There used to be a time when having multiple cc accounts or opening and closing cc accounts would negatively impact your credit, but those days are gone from what I've read. FWIW, I use my credit cards heavily, but pay them off every month without fail.
