1080i vs 1080p is best distinguishable with large digital monitors. IMHO I would invest in an upconverting DVD with 1080i output and enjoy a great picture without the additional costs of Blu-ray players and media, and the irritating delay most Blu-ray players have when loading a disc.
The HDMI vs component discussion is moot at this point.
