I am a long time Subaru owner. I don't have any at the moment but have had 5 of them over the years. I completely agree with your observation about instability on slippery roads. I always felt far safer in my SAABs when driving on snow and ice. Given the choice, my wife also would always pick a SAAB over a Subaru when expecting to drive in snow.
One time it snowed hard and we had over a foot of snow everywhere. My old 900 (1986) and my new Subaru Impreza 25RS (at the time) wore exactly the same all-season tires of the same size and model. Except the ones on the SAAB were far older and more worn out. Compared to the Subie the 900 was an absolute tank, going through snow drifts and very deep snow without any suggestion of getting stuck, stable as if driven on rails. During the same day my Impreza spun out several times, despite being driven gingerly. After this I broke down and bought snow tires for the Subie....
My front wheel drive Impreza (1994) was excellent in snow. I did always have good snow tires on it, though. It was far more comfortable and more stable on slippery pavement than the AWD ones I owned.
