Lease return problem... 2 years late!

I just received a call from a collection agency about ~$1000 I supposedly owe GMAC for a car I returned in Dec 2008! This is the first that I have been contacted about this. 2 years of silence and now there's a collection agency calling me on Saturday morning!
The car was sold by the dealer the same day (or maybe within a few days) to a friend of mine. He still has the car and likes it very much. Therefore, the car never made it back to GMAC so there could be no mileage or wear-and-tear charges (not that the car had any issues, but it never made it to that phase of the process, right?) I set up this deal to have my friend buy it to help me with my deal for my new Saab.
I have requested a breakdown of charges to see what exactly they claim I owe. However, since I shouldn't owe them anything, I wonder what kind of trumped up charges they have and don't know how I will be able to prove anything... 2 years down the road...
I looked through the paperwork I have from when I turned it in and all that I can really prove is the date and the mileage. I did this with my prior lease with the same dealer without any problems so I my guard was down with respect to documenting everything.
Possibly related is the fact that Saab Financial sent me a couple letters requesting proof of insurance for this car after I turned it in. I did try to clear this up, but after a few hours on hold and talking to people who could not help, and writing and faxing, I gave up. I no longer had the car so I didn't think there would be any problems created by not having proof of insurance for it.
IMHO, my account was screwed up at SaabFin (hence the request for insurance proof), and then got more screwed up when it was transitioned to GMAC (why the heck did I even have an account for a car I turned in 2 years ago?!?)
Has this happened to anybody else?
Any advice on how to handle this?
I'm so mad right now I can hardly see straight!
Thanks in advance,
Stan
