Our economy over the past 20 or so years has been artificially inflated by outsourcing work to places with cheaper labor rates. First to go are manufacturing jobs, but eventually the engineering jobs follow.
Fine. Maybe we don't want to make running shoes, or consumer electronics domestically. That is what outsourcing says: we don't want to make it, lets pay someone else to do it. So we have to replace that with something. So maybe we need to be at the cutting edge of some other (highly profitable) fields (medical technology etc). Service industries alone won't cut it. Unfortunately, many of the most high tech industries are also outsourcing manufacturing (and now everything) to China (I previously worked at one of the larger optical networking companies in the world + outsourced products to China). A lot of it comes down to attitudes: we're all after short term greed rather than long term stability. That needs to change a little bit + a focus on innovation to stay ahead (we're already starting to fall behind)...
